Topic: ICE — In Case of Emergency, Resiliency and Thermal Storage, Presented by Bruce Lindsay

Bruce Lindsay, PE, CEM, CDP is the Principal and CTO of Lindsay & Associates, an energy storage consulting firm.  He recently served as the Business Development Team Leader, Thermal Energy Storage, for Trane Technologies.  Prior to that, he served as the Manager, Utility Services, for Brevard Public Schools, where he managed 84 schools, 20 of which had ice storage systems.  Mr. Lindsay was employed by the Electric Power Research Institute and was the Executive Director of the EPRI Thermal Storage Center.  Mr. Lindsay is an ASHRAE Life Member and an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer.  He serves on the Refrigeration Technology Committee and is also the Program Chair for ASHRAE TC6.9, Thermal Storage.

Thermal energy storage systems can provide flexibility and resiliency to air conditioning systems in hot and humid climates. This is especially important to military and mission-critical facilities. Chiller plants are sensitive to power quality issues on the grid and may experience nuisance outages. Thermal storage can permit quicker response and restore cooling. Thermal storage can also provide redundancy and provide a window for repair. New investment tax credits coupled with utility rebates make it attractive to add thermal energy storage to existing chiller plants.  We will explore how this can be utilized in schools and public buildings.
